Rocking a New Look? I often get asked “when should an actor update their headshots?” The answer is simple: do you still look exactly the same as you do in your most recent actor headshot? This is where you have to get brutally honest with yourself: take a deep breath and admit that if yes, you may have put on a few pounds and accrued a few more wrinkles since your last headshot session ten years ago, it may be […]
Some of the most challenging theatre photography I have done was in capturing a performance of The Broken Heart at The Old Rep theatre in Birmingham. The lighting was extremely dark and in some cases, entire scenes were lit by nothing but candles. As a theatre photographer it is important to be able to overcome challenges such as dimly lit shows which often simply comes down to your equipment. Luckily I was armed with fast lenses and a Nikon D3s which […]
When I’m not working on set of feature films and TV dramas as a unit still photographer, I love working as a theatre photographer in Birmingham. There is so much great theatre on my doorstep and it makes a nice change to be able to work locally instead of travelling to opposite ends of the country! Today I wanted to share some of the theatre photography of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ being performed by the 3rd year students of […]
On Friday, Carol Morely’s The Falling was released nationwide to cinemas and boy didn’t we all know it! I was taken by surprise at the brilliant advertising and marketing efforts that had gone into getting it to screens and getting it an audience. Since I started my career as a unit stills photographer, I have kept a list of targets to act as milestones and mark my progression over the years. On Friday, two more of those milestones were achieved: […]

Thanks to my buddies at Tip Top Photography Studios, I am pleased to officially announce a new location available for my actor headshot sessions: ‘The Gem!’ Based in Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, ‘The Gem,’ is a privately owned dilapidated building with the most amazing character and colours in its highly textured walls! It’s an ideal location for those who want a shoot in natural light but without having to contend with the risk of rain and wind that threatens to reschedule […]
With the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris heading up proceedings, the 2015 Oscar winners are finally known! Hot favourite, Eddie Redmayne surprised no-one by receiving the accolade for Best Leading Actor for his superb performance as astrophysicist, Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, though the brilliant film unfortunately did not secure any more of the prestigious statuettes. It was in fact Birdman who cleaned up the proceedings by earning itself 4 awards including; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay […]
Stephen Fry kicked off the 2015 BAFTA results and last night’s revelatons certainly kept the Oscar race exciting with hot favourite, Birdman, surprisingly only receiving one award for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubzeki. Meanwhile, Boyhood took the lead by winning 3 of its 5 nominations including Best Film, Director and Supporting Actress. The film’s director, Richard Linklater unfortunately didn’t make it to London to claim the award in person but no doubt we’ll see him at the Oscars now that he has […]
